Mert Mirly and The Rhythm Steppers, a well known band, was the starting point for several musicians. Charlie Thurman, guitarist, who later went on to play for Nashville artist Red Sovine, and a host of others, Billy Swan, keyboard player, Erving Waddlington, keyboard player Jerry Bass, bass guitar player, and a young Fred Horrell on Bass Guitar and vocalist. ![]() |

At the age of 18, encouraged by his friends, Fred Horrell entered a talent contest at Onie Wheeler's Ozark Corrall. He won first place singing Roy Orbison's "Ooby Dooby". The rest is history. From there he joined Mert Mirly and the Rhythm Steppers as lead vocalist.
